Saturday Night Live is in a bit of a pickle after Twitter sleuths dug up some dirt on Shane Gillis, one of the show’s new cast members. Variety reports that a number of clips have been dragged out into the light, in which Gillis uses offensive language while discussing Asians, Muslims, gay people and women.

The source of the material is reportedly Gillis’ podcast, “Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast.” In one episode (since taken down from YouTube) he lashes out at Chinese Americans, calling Chinatown “fucking nuts.”

“It is full fucking China,” he says. “It’s fucking Chinee down there.”

When his guest wonders how Chinatown was formed, Gillis (imagining what someone involved in the planning might have been thinking), says: “Let the fucking chinks live there.”

He goes on to complain about the language barrier he encounters in Chinese restaurants. “It’s just such a fucking hassle,” he says. “It’s like, I’m pointing at it [the item on the menu].”

Gillis used the same episode to express some juvenile views about Islam, joking: “There’s only one way there [into heaven], dude … You gotta spill blood, you gotta praise Allah by spilling blood.”

In another episode Gillis reportedly says “retard” and “faggot” before likening the rape of “hot Southern boys” during the American Civil War to “having gay sex in jail.” The context of these weird comments is a mystery, but Gillis reportedly goes on to say “flat-chested fucking bitch” in reference to women who fought in the war.

As the clips circulated the internet, Gillis issued this statement:

“I’m a comedian who pushes boundaries. I sometimes miss. If you go through my 10 years of comedy, most of it bad, you’re going to find a lot of bad misses. I’m happy to apologize to anyone who’s actually offended by anything I’ve said. My intention is never to hurt anyone but I am trying to be the best comedian I can be and sometimes that requires risks.”

It remains to be seen whether Gillis will be “canceled,” but the odds are certainly not on his side.
