McLaren is pushing the envelope with a new variation of its distinguished GT supercar: the Verdant Theme. The sharp new model, developed by McLaren Special Operations (MSO), represents a culmination of McLaren’s renowned innovations in craftsmanship.
As the name implies, the Verdant Theme GT is meant to evoke the mood and texture of some of nature’s most lush and pristine landscapes. The car’s body features a subtly tapered color scheme that employs three custom-made shades of green. According to McLaren, it took MSO 430 hours to complete the satin paint job. Illustrating McLaren’s attention to detail, the green hues extend to the wheels, brake calipers and exhaust pipe.
In a first for McLaren—and supercars in general—the upholstery of the Verdant Theme GT is draped with cashmere. That’s right, everyone’s favorite luxury wool pervades the car’s interior. As McLaren admits, the reasons for this are purely aesthetic.
“I’ll be honest, the idea to use cashmere wasn’t born of any desire to demonstrate sustainability, but rather to incorporate a wool that is regarded as one of the most luxurious in the world into a vehicle,” CEO Mike Flewitt said.
“It started as an idea and then we really pushed it, so the wool is in all the areas you are most likely to touch, and it really does add something to the car. The idea of using more sustainable products is appealing, and being considered, but this was driven by an idea to integrate a new, luxurious material into a car.”
The Verdant Theme boasts the same high-performance specs as its fellow Grand Tourers, including McLaren’s patented Proactive Damping Control suspension and a 612 bhp 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 engine. Speaking of performance, the GT goes from 0-60mph in 3.1 seconds. And yet its engineers still manged to create just over 20 cubic feet of space for luggage.
Ansar Ali, Managing Director, McLaren Special Operations, summed it up:
“The McLaren Verdant Theme GT by MSO is the perfect showcase for us in the way it takes modern-luxury to the next level by incorporating so much innovation. The Grand Tourer of McLaren’s range provides a sophisticated and elegant canvas for our artistry, but also I hope the spark that will inspire every McLaren owner as they seek ever more ways to personalize their car, whether it is GT, sports convertible, track supercar, or the ultimate uncompromised road car such as our new McLaren Elva.”
