Laneway is hitting Melbourne this Saturday (oh my gosh you guys the weather so good) and we’re super pumped to be able to see some our favourite bands of the past year play live. The above timetable shows how we’d ideally like our day to roll out. Isn’t it comprehensive? As always, we have a few wise words of festival advice that are tried and tested:

Do not drink 3 bottles of champagne before you arrive. Pace yo’selves before you wreck yo’selves.

Acid is scary. Anxiety Annie has warned you. In fact drugs in general are danger zone, unless you’re on Aspro Clear. Take Panadol for headaches too. They happen.

Sunscreen! Lay it on thick and fast. It’s going to be hot (31°C) and sunny. You’ll thank us on Sunday.

Big breakfasts all around are a must. You’ll need the dancing energy.

Ear plugs and cash. You know the ATM queue is going to be cray so don’t bother arriving empty handed. And ear plugs so you can continue to enjoy music later in life.

Take friends. Or make some. They’ll make your day double as good.

Like always, we’re going to be taking snaps on the day of the glad rags and groovy bands. And 3G connection permitting, we’ll also be tweeting. Say hi if you see us!

Awesome Day Out,
Comeback Kid

PS. We made this Laneway Mix a few months back. Have a listen to get you into the mood!

They add a little ‘something’ to your look without crazy levels of fuss so we decided to get some in at Comeback Kid. The CBK Wooden Bead Bracelet hits the store shelves (and virtual shelves) very shortly and at $9 (for the smaller beads) and $12 (for the larger) a pop you can’t really go wrong.

The moving images in the above Mood Board are a quick look at the styles we have coming in. Expect some brighter colours too!

More often than not it’s not a whole outfit we love but the way it’s styled. Maybe it’s the cool layering or a collar turned up.
It seems perfectly fitting that with the 35°C weather today in Melbourne we announce the latest arrival at Comeback Kid: the CBK Summer Singlet! Basically the most basic garment known to man the “singlet” (derived from the ancient Latin word for near-naked) was invented by single people in the early 1960s as a way of showing off their hot bods. Hot bod or not, this style is so easy to layer you’ll find yourself wearing it even when the sun isn’t so sweltering. Available in grey marle, navy, white and black: the CBK Summer Singlet is now in store and will be available through our online store from next Monday!

An easy addition to any summer wardrobe and at $25 a pop, an affordable one too!

Nothing beats a lazy afternoon trawling through Best Of lists and discovering new sounds. Or new books. Or new films. So in the spirit of discovery and sharing the highlights of last year with our readers, This Is Comeback Kid’s 2011 In Music. Like it or lump it or read on with pleasure but a warning: this is one big post! And there’s a touch of swearing too…

So click through to join us; Pat, Ricky and Greta as we talk you through our favourite sounds of 2k11. Enjoy.

Pat The Mix Tape Master

True to his title Pat’s greatest achievement for 2011 was his insane ability to find awesome mix tapes weekly. A new one seemed to appear in the store iTunes everyday and each was as addictive as the one that came before. He also seemed to have Hype Machine connected to his brain and without fail he could discover a new song, then the remix to that song and then the remix of the remix within 3 hours of its initial release. A gift indeed! So on that note, Pat’s going to take us through his lists for 2011. All these boppers wanna bop ‘em…

Ricky The Little Dragon Lunatic

There’s something curious about Ricky because he always manages to delve into the darkest depth of new music and come out the other end trapped in the wrong decade with a taste for something slightly bizarre and unrelated to his initial love. Wow that sentence made no sense. Basically, his musical journey starts at Point A and we have no idea how he gets to Point B and one years Obsession is the next years Hate and dammit… Ricky’s going to take us through his lists for 2011 for his words are clearer than ours. And just as sure as one and one is two, I know I’ll take care of you…

Top 5 Music Moments

Getting into Brazilian Bossa Nova because it’s the perfect accompaniment to cider and a hot summer’s day. Listen to Astrud Gilberto’s rendition of old classics such as ‘The Girl From Ipanema’ and ‘Agua De Beber’.

I’ve taken quite a liking towards German minimal techno. For some reason I find the repetition of the beats rather soothing. Been listening to German DJ Paul Kalkbrenner a lot lately.

Discovering that 90s Eurodance classics + smoke machine + laser lights make a party. Thinks Vengaboys, Corona’s ‘The Rhythm Of The Night’, La Bouche, Haddaway, Fragma etc. you catch my drift.

Having been to Tokyo in mid 2011 and embracing the house and techno music that was on offer whilst out partying in their capital, I’ve learnt that Japanese electronic music never shies away from innovation with its fusion of genres. Some of the mixtapes that I’ve been listening to (listed above) are the works of Japanese DJs.

Sorry but I am officially off the Hip Hop bandwagon. Now I’m strictly Kanye only.

Ricky’s New Year Resolutions for 2012

I will:

Listen to more Brazilian samba music;

Listen to more songs in foreign languages;

Start getting back into 80s music ie. The Human League and New Order now that they’re playing Future Music Festival;

Get into 70s disco; and

Get my hands on Rihanna’s whole back catalogue.

Azealia Banks, she was in the 212. Screen grab from this.

Greta The Party Pest
Try as she might, Greta picked up 2011 where 2010 left off and continued her steady relationship with pop, Hip Hop and had a rather passionate affair with Moombahton in between. That’s not to say there weren’t any quieter moments (you know with acoustic guitars and sad songs) but for the most part this year was about dancing. So get your most comfortable shoes on (and pants you can really move in) because Greta’s going to take us through her lists for 2011. I don’t speak German but I can if you like…

Primal Scream | Big Day Out | 40 degree heat spacey time warp bliss.

Diplo | Parklife | I’m still sore.

Os Mutantes | Golden Plains | A brief holiday to 1960s South America and coming out the other end enlightened.
Elton John | Rod Laver Arena | How to be a consummate professional, charming as hell but surprisingly humble.

World’s End Press | Some Warehouse Party Somewhere | FARK YEAH.

Top 5 New Discoveries
Shabazz Palaces | Black Up |How good was this album? How good are rhetorical questions? The lyrics, the way not one song ends how it starts. Love at first listen.

Rihanna | Talk That Talk | Yeah, I hear you, she’s been pretty mayjah since 2005 but my ears are only just giving her the respect she deserves. Awesome relentless pop fun.

Lana Del Rey | A few singles, a few leaked tracks | Despite a long is-she-isn’t-she chin wag I had with Pat about Ms. Del Rey the other day she still remains in a cloud of mystery. I mean we tried to answer The Questions. Are her lips real? Does it matter? Will her album be awesome or become a painful cafe staple? Is she really writing those tracks? Is she flat live or just shy? None of this really matters of course because we’re still eagerly awaiting her debut regardless.

A$AP Rocky | LiveLoveA$AP | Tyler, The Creator (LOL comma) stole the rap spotlight last year for mainly the wrong reasons (I’m sorry, but I could write lyrics about doing horrific things to women and killing gay men in about 10 minutes: Not That Hard Nor That Pleasant) but it was A$AP Rocky who had some truly wicked beats and some very fun lyrics without too much hate. He be that pretty mutha fucker.

Wu Lyf | Go Tell Fire To The Mountain | Sadly they’ve pulled out of the Laneway bill but these four Manchurians make some pretty epic tracks. Fun Fact: according to Wikipedia David Letterman is a fan. I know I am.
