About Last Night | Midmouse at Penthouse Mouse

Upper Left Arm in action!
Last night we took a night off. LOL. As if! Actually, last night we traipsed into the depths of Fitzroy to attend our second Penthouse Mouse event, Midmouse. Midmouse is an excuse to catch up with friends, have a drink or two and see both emerging and established designers show off their wares on moving people. A catwalk! We were super excited for the runway debut of Comeback Kid label, Upper Left Arm. Showing pieces from their Autumn Winter 2012 season (hitting the online store soon!) the male models rocked vibrant shirts, with equally proud slacks, knits featuring the signature ULA acronym and relaxed tees with mad eye-catching prints. The models sported brutally cropped and chopped electric green wigs and the whole show just rocked in general. Congratulations Jac and Kasia! Some insanely blurry pictures below:

We also took a few quick snaps of the crowd. Surprisingly less blurry. Be proud of us.

Awesome layering military camo awesomeness.

All the other kids with the pumped up kicks…

So many brilliant DI$COUNT pieces were floating around last night. Stud mania pictured above.

Hurricane wire. Wow, someone’s hungover… could I manage a better description?!

Super casual purple beanie and a wicked fro. It’s definitely beanie weather now…

Love is free.

This is a girl. DEAL WITH IT. She looked rad.

About Last Night | Penthouse Mouse Opening Party

About Last Night? Wow we really need to change that category title.
Last Friday night we hit up the Penthouse Mouse launch to DJ (thank you so much for having us guys!) and to check out the epic installations, wicked labels and of course, take snaps of the man-crowd. There’s a little myth that Penthouse Mouse attracts ‘Melbourne black clothing’ and sure, that crowd is there (hell, I’m wearing head-to-toe black as I type) but many of the crowd sported colourful attire like pros. They seek him here, they seek him there; his clothes are loud but never square:

Ah tie-dye! A particularly good example is pictured above.

You know we’re fans of a an easy plaid shirt and this is a good example. It was paired with jeans to keep it nice and casual.

This guy is rocking classic stripes LIKE A BOSS.

Man-floral was a surprise stand out trend for the night and we were particularly digging the blue hues pictured above…

…and the vintage cord style you can see here. Such a wicked print.

Lastly here’s Kevin sporting the paisley print trend (cleverly broken up with a denim vest) and that’s Pat in the background wearing his CBK Backpack (does he ever take it off?!) and his new Libertine-Libertine tee.
You’ve got the look!

About Last Night | Comeback Kid does Laneway Festival Melbourne

Seriously scenic: Kevin and Pat strolling towards Austra as a freight train rattles by and the city watches on. Oh yeah, Pat’s totally rocking his CBK Odd Strap Backpack too. Plug.
Saturday saw us Comeback Kid’s (with our trusty and ever entertaining side-kick Kevin) head over the river to party under the sun at this years Laneway Festival. The heat meant we decided to start our day a touch later than initially planned so the second we hit the venue (the very fun to explore Footscray Community Arts Centre) we moved quickly to see Austra. We knew little about Austra (aside from buzz track Lose It) but we were quickly charmed by their collective stage presence, back up dancing skills and spacey beats. Beer in hand, this was the perfect introduction to what proved to be one of the most relaxed festivals going round.

Christopher Owens from Girls, call me.
We waited eagerly at the same stage to catch Girls, whom we’re all fans of and as tipsiness took hold we fell head over heels for their deliciously poppy beats and fresh live sound. Lead singer Christopher Owens was captivating with his acidic, bright hair; part Jarvis Cocker, part Kurt Cobain (anyone else see that?) 100% himself I’m sure, he led his band through a set of spot on summer sounds.

This novelty giant fan pretty much made my day. It created a surprisingly refreshing blast of wind.
It’s all starting to get a bit hazy but I vaguely remember loosing Kevin, craving a Raph Burger (and promptly eating one), bumping into friends and listening to (what sounded like a lovely set) from Twin Shadow. We caught up on some much needed leg resting grass time before we strolled along the river to catch a blissful set from the Cults on the opposite stage.

Feist screen time.
A brisk stroll up the hill lead us to the main stage and some time with Feist. Can’t really say I’m a Feist fan but we were mellowed out by her chilled set all the same. The crowd seemed to dig it so clearly I’m missing something. I stayed on to watch The Horrors (pretty much every person was recommending them) and Pat broke off to catch Toro Y Moi. The Horrors rocked out and got a previously calm audience on their feet and moving. Pat said Toro Y Moi was a really paired back set and I have no thoughts from Kevin to add to this sentence. From there the three of us reunited under the blissful sounds of The Drums who’s albums have been played to within an inch of their lives here at Comeback Kid. The sun was shining down, the super friendly crowd were moving to the same beat and the very familiar sounds from this Brooklyn based band proved to be just as punchy live.

Miscellaneous picture of a howling pink dog statue.
Our day was coming to a close but before the festivities ceased a huge crowd swarmed around the stage to catch the much hyped SBTRKT. Despite a slightly delayed start (the band members were very apologetic) they proceeded to run through all of our favourites from their album and get everyone moving to their dance dance electro beats. An upbeat ending to a seriously blissful day.
Yours,
Comeback Kid
About Last Night | Meredith Madness

Guy wearing seriously rad tank looking thoughtful but also like he’s in a happy place.
This weekend saw Comeback Kid head to the 21st Meredith Music Festival just out of Geelong for camping, music, drinking, Raph burgers and butterflies. There were so many butterflies! In this (rather extensive) post we take a look at the fashion highlights and a few of our stories and thoughts from what was a very fun weekend away. Grab a beer and your sunscreen, let’s go!
Friday
We got off to a relatively smooth start along the Princes to Geelong (despite an initial shit forgot the tickets! moment) to find ourselves in the car queue at the gates. Phone reception was on our side as we hunted down a pack of fellow campers who had kindly set up a marquee we could share and reserved a pretty sweet location in the centre of Hong Kong. Beers in hand we trooped down into the masses (after setting up our temporary homes in the scorching 30 degree sun) to catch the end of Unknown Mortal Orchestra and the full set of the very relaxed Kurt Vile & The Violators. And then we had our first Raph Burgers. Oh some kind of heavenly bliss! We were instant Beatbox Kitchen converts. Stomachs full we decided to watch a band called Barbarion whom none of us knew anything about. In a flash of intense pyrotechnics and hilarious lyrics (CHOP REAL MEN CHOP) we’d undergone our second conversion of the day. Who thought us Hype Machine addicts could be so entertained by a metal band in battle gear? It was love at first sight. Ladyhawke followed with what can generously be described as a lack luster set and a solid reminder that having a good marketing campaign doesn’t equal stage presence or singing skills. Her performance aside, damn she can write a good pop song and her new tunes sound pretty rad for a first listen. Our suggestion to her? Write music for others. Sell My Delirium to Katy Perry. Let Karen O have a go at Magic. Maybe even divvy up some of your tracks to Madonna and Britney, they both need some good new beats. Future of the Left picked up where Barbarion left off and rocked out hard but at this stage of steady drinking I vaguely remember heading to bed. And then Harmonic 313‘s truly epic DJ set woke me up. If you were still down there partying. I SALUTE YOU.

Great shirt and soft grass, what more could a happy camper want? Perfectly swept back locks of course.

Totally not saying this because we sell them but basically every cool person was wearing an Hawaiian shirt. Check out the tiger on his.
Saturday
We started our second day with an upbeat set from locals Oscar + Martin just before midday and then sat under our marquee and drank until 7:30pm and then had more Raph Burgers. Seriously. Icehouse swung our Saturday night into an awesome groove with their set of classics and were the perfect lead-in to fellow Australians Cut Copy. Cut Copy wowed. With so many truly awesome albums under their belt it sounded like a greatest hits set. For half an hour rain fell and what should’ve been a mood killer actually enhanced the show. The eternally angry and passionate Nick Cave followed fronting what The Vine are reporting as his last show with Grinderman. As ever their set was powerful and intense, though we were a touch disappointed they didn’t perform Palaces of Montezuma as this softer song would’ve served as some respite from their otherwise kick-in-the-face live show intensity. At this stage I vaguely remember pretending to be Barack Obama rapping and then lecturing a friend on my Brain Tunnel theory. I was becoming as intense as Nick so I (unfortunately) sent myself to bed. Pat got to witness a mad set from The Juan Pablo Family Hour (we watched from our campsite as the sky exploded with paper glitter and light) and then a somewhat confusing (and x-rated) one from Big Freedia. I just remember hearing the word ‘ass’ for about 45 minutes as I slowly fell to sleep. Apparently if you were watching you just saw ass for 45 minutes.

Easy layers and pattern play: effortless cool. Quite jealous because at this stage we looked like we’d been camping for four years.

Print on print win. Loved this look.

Who wears short shorts? Not this guy. He’s too cool for that rubbish.
Sunday
We woke to the soothing sounds of Master Song Tai Chi and in a totally out-of-character fashion did the right thing and packed up our tents before heading down to watch the ever entertaining Eagle and the Worm and LOL with the hilarious Dennis Cometti (Master MC). Tiredness had officially taken over our bodies and our desire to get home and shower outran our need to see peen. We did catch a few eager contestants as they stripped down for The Meredith Gift (a nude race) but as the crowd cheered them on our trusty car slowly began the journey back to Melbourne and we reminisced on what had been an awesome weekend away.
Thank you Aunty Meredith!

About Last Night | Jesen Summer Launch

Image: Oh Jamie
Before we delve into photos of the Jesen summer launch held in store last night we have a few ‘thank you’s’ to make, as these awesome festivities wouldn’t have been possible without the (very big) help of the following people:
Ricky, Charles and Rob for manning the bar, keeping on top of the ever increasing pile of bottles and just being charming, awesome and brilliant in general! Ricky, we’ve decided to award you the Comeback Kid Staff Member of the Month Award. Congratulations!
Michelle and her partner-in-crime Steph for hanging out in the lane all night and keeping an eye on the door. Great job you guys!
Jackie, Leon and Rowdy a.k.a. The Squad for sweeping, bottle gathering and pro-cleaning. The store was immaculate this morning! Thank you guys.
To Megan and Old Mout Cider for providing us thirsty Melbournians with the most delicious ciders last night. Many a cider convert was made!
To Simon, Claire and the team at Hunter for the ever pop-tastic and delicious Grolsch. And a second thank you to Simon for heading out to grab us another round too! People were thirsty!
Jamie again, thank you for more great photos! And yes, your new jacket is mentally good.
To everyone who came, thank you! Such a friendly crowd; good times.
And lastly, to Ivan for an amazing collection, brilliant launch and two pretty darn wicked signs! We hope you had a great night.
So without further ado, let’s see what went down, upstairs last night:

Image: Oh Jamie
These shorts are already disappearing off the rack. Ivan has designed the ultimate pair of summer shorts. It’s that simple.

Grins all-round with the Old Mout in hand.

Light, summery shirts were the flavor of the night, so were big smiles and mysterious hovering flowers.

This guy was having a moment with his beer. I rudely interrupted.

More Jesen, including your new favourite plaid shirt and the worlds loudest (and proudest) red raincoat. Splash!

Ricky representing in a CBK Vintage Hawaiian shirt. Too good.

Perfect weather, brilliant night. I think this photo sums that up.
Party Friends,
Comeback Kid
