Comeback Kid Presents | An Interview with Ivan from Jesen

A behind the scenes look at the Jesen AW12 shoot.
Ivan Budah from Comeback Kid label Jesen continues to surprise. Only last Wednesday, in Sydney, at midnight, he leapt out of a moving cab to run up to us in the street to scream hello and then back again. Swerve! And obviously he surprises with design (wait till you see the greyhound print chinos for winter) but this season he’s really upped the ante by launching Jesen womenswear. But don’t worry, we’re still just catering for you guys! In an effort to get inside Ivan’s mind and more to the point an excuse for a chat, we caught up with him to get the latest goss. Question time:
Your latest AW12 collection is about to arrive online at Comeback Kid. This season you’ve kept things fun and interesting with coloured panelling, some knitwear and even a pretty sick greyhound print! What was the inspiration and process behind the collection this season?
Yes there was a lot of dabbling going on with this AW range. I found myself merging styles and referencing bold colours in the Pantone book. I made a conscious decision to try to give most pieces a point of difference. I felt that the previous range played it quite safe, so I wanted to take a few more risks with this collection. I found that the end result definitely has a bit of a street wear feel to it too. I guess it was all the mix tapes I was listening to at the time.
Our favourite piece would have to be the greyhound print chinos (we’ve already mentioned them about 800 times in this post)! What are your favourites this season? And what will you be wearing from Jesen Autumn Winter 12?
My favourites this season are probably the greyhound print chino’s too and the Mohair knit. I have the pleasure of sampling myself a new wardrobe every season and I have probably worn those two items the most. The denim puffy has been getting a lot of love too.
This season you’ve dabbled with knitwear and The Wifey knit looks killer: how would you wear this?
I think you could wear the Wifey knit with most things, I have personally worn it with shorts, chino’s and jeans.
So tell us more about the Jesen womenswear line! Can you explain to us how this came about?
It was a bit of a last minute decision to include women’s into the range. It started when my girlfriend asked me if she could sample some women’s pieces in my factory to sell through her blog a week before we left. I naturally said NO. When I’m over there sampling a range I’m generally pretty crunched for time and I didn’t want anything to slow down the process. It didn’t actually occur to me to offer her a position as a womenswear designer for Jesen, nor was I even sure if she wanted to. After a few days of being over there, we got into the conversation of her designing some pieces for the collection and just like that she became the womenswear designer. So together we came up with 15-20 women’s styles and got the ball rolling with sampling. Natascha comes from a design background so she handled the whole process like a boss.
How are you going to spend your spare time this winter? Any Melbourne hot tips/secrets?
I’m probably the worst person to approach for tips/secrets in Melbourne, I’m so out of the loop these days. Ask Livinia Nixon, she seems to know all of the “hidden lane ways”.
I’m lucky enough to not be in Melbourne for a good portion of this winter. I’ll be in Singapore, Hong Kong, New York and Indonesia. Not that I don’t love Melbourne, I just hate the cold.
If this collection were to come with a soundtrack who would write and perform it?
Thats a hard one… Considering the collection has some street wear elements, I guess it would have to be a love child between Biggie and Elliott Smith.
Thanks Ivan!
Jesen AW 12 will be online from next Monday! Keep an eye on our Twitter or Facebook for when it drops! Or this blog right here!

We found these images on Tumblr.
It’s no secret that we’ve been digging the 5-panel cap style for a while now here at Comeback Kid. Our recent delivery of I Love Ugly printed 5-panels have been going gangbusters (only a handful left!) so to celebrate our favourite head accessory we put together this moodboard to show you how it’s done! Stay tuned: more 5-panels will be added to the online store in the coming months.

Hear Me Now | Loose Fit
Our latest 8tracks mix features no new tracks whatsoever. Yep. None. Nada. Zip. Nope. I know right? Despite our love for new sounds we also have a fondness for tunes released long before 2k12. This particular mix tape is also meant to be a little bit warming too. Just in case your Saturday has been as wintery as the one Melbourne has put on. Hopefully we’ve picked some tracks you’ve never heard and are ready to fall for or maybe some that you’ve forgotten you loved. You’ll hear Buzzcocks, Inspiral Carpets, Nirvana and some!
Hit play HERE.
