Hear Me Now | Supafest Supapost

Naughty by Nature, not by nurture.
If you’re going to stream any of the tracks below (or read any of the words) a warning, there is swearing! So if that’s not your thang, skip this post please.
After the success of last year’s Supafest (we had a seriously good time) Australia’s largest urban* music festival is back with a vengeance at the end of April to help you get your groove on. If it’s anything like last year you’re guaranteed to see a good lookin’ and supafresh crowd, plenty of mad dance moves (from me, obvs) and some very talented musicians (Nelly wowed in 2011). I even managed to get very close to Snoop Dogg’s pants. VERY CLOSE TO THE PANTS. So today we’ve decided to take a look at this years line-up (a big dose of new acts were announced over the weekend) and some of our favourite tracks from each. In the spirit of a similar post we did last April we’ll also be providing the birth names for each artist. BECAUSE OF THE LULZ. I can do it put my back in to it:
Naughty by Nature (originally called New Style) – Feel Me Flow
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
So Naughty by Nature were announced over the weekend to join the already rad line up and we got some kind of old school 90s shiver of excitement and started screaming “you down with O.P.P.” (which you know we’re not, because cheating is bad you guys) and then “Hip Hop Hooray” because this is bound to be the sing-a-long set of the day.
Ice Cube (birth certificate reads: O’Shea Jackson) – It Was A Good Day
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
So Ice Cube (who you may know of as a pretty darn successful actor) (Boyz n the Hood anyone?!) is basically Hip Hop royalty and we’re pumped to finally catch him live. Partly because his solo work is epic good fun but also because he was a founding member of N.W.A. and that’s some may-jah credentials for anyone’s resume. I can also confidently say that I know all the lyrics to this track and do you remember it in Save The Last Dance?! Best film. Anyway, in the words of Mr. Cube himself he’s still coming with the underground gangsta shit and we’re pumped to see it live. WE BE CLUBBIN’.
Kelly Rowland (birth certificate reads: Kelendria Trene “Kelly“ Rowland) – When Love Takes Over
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
Big up yourself Kelly for taking a mildly horrific name and making it conventional! That’s a truly rare quality in the world of pop/Hip Hop. Kelly gets further praise because this is her second time on tour with Supafest in as many years and as we missed her the first time around we’re pretty pumped to now get the opportunity to see her live. You may know Ms. Rowland from a wee lil’ group called Destiny’s Child but the Kelly we love is THIS ONE. WORK! Also, seeing ‘When Love Takes Over’ has been a dream of mine since I decided it was an unofficial gay-anthem after she headlined at Mardi Gras. Nothing beats a gay anthem. Ask Kylie.
P-Diddy a.k.a. Puff Daddy, Diddy, Poppadiddypop (birth certificate reads: Sean John Combs) – I’ll Be Missing You
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
Fun fact: the third album I ever bought was P-Diddy’s debut release No Way Out and it’s so old and over played that the cover is completely crushed and the CD is scratched like crazy. But I still love it. And I still play it. A lot of the tracks on that album are about Sean mourning the loss of his friend The Notorious B.I.G. who died months before the album was released in ’97. After that somewhat melancholy/somewhat upbeat album he pretty much mastered bangin’ party tracks which means his set at Supafest is going to require some serious boogying down. Our picks? D.I.D.D.Y. rules (thanks to help from Jimmy), Bad Boys For Life (represent) and if you’re wondering what it’s all about, it’s the Benjamins.
Big Sean (birth certificate reads: Sean Michael Anderson)

Comeback Kid

All Mixed Up | A Milli Mix Tape

Our last few mix tapes have been a little cafe, no? Dare we say some of them are so chilled out they’re verging on sleep inducing tools so this week we decided to shift gears, turn the volume to 11 and hit the d-floor. LOOK, we didn’t go too crazy, there are some ‘quiet’ moments in this mix (Xaphoon Jones Apple Juice Break comes to mind) but there’s also some pretty intense body shaking head flicking moments (precisely 2 minutes and 29 seconds of Skrillex perfection). So hold onto your hat and join us on a journey into a glorious fusion of pure pop, Moombahton, Dancehall, Hip Hop and then some. I don’t know what it means! No one knows what it means but it’s provocative:

Hey! I Can Be The Answer,
Comeback Kid
Full track listing and cover image after the jump:
Local Love | Feskyval at Ceres this Saturday
You, the reader: Riddle me this Comeback Kid, tell me why should I head along to Feskyval this Saturday? I mean, I did Meredith, I’ve got Golden Plains coming up (know anyone who can drive me by the way?) and I’ve also seen about six sideshows. I’m kind of exhausted actually.
Me, the person writing this: Ah, my friend! Because Feskyval Is A Festival With A Difference. Sounds cliché I know but wait:
Firstly, all profits go to charity. THIS CHARITY. Secondly, there are no stupid drink tickets and too-tight wrist bands and $47 cans of formerly cheap beer because: You Can Pack Your Own Alcohol Fueled Esky*. Also, the festivities kick off at 2pm (rather than the touch-too-early 11am that most start) so you can mosey on down to Ceres at a relaxed pace. And lastly, I’ll be there. So you can buy me a drink (alcohol is for sale on the day too) or throw me one from your own stash and we’ll talk about UFOs and if Jesus was really a Buddhist and other conspiracy theories that genuinely thrill me. Who knows, maybe we’ll become friends.
Anyway, what I’m getting at in a terrifyingly long winded way (sorry Mrs. Schofield, year 12 English teacher) is that Feskyval is the perfect way to spend your Saturday with friends relaxing in the sun AND supporting a charity. Too good.
You, the reader: OK, OK how do I get tickets?
Me, the persuasive writer: You can grab tickets HERE or try your luck on the day and at $35 each you’ll be hard pressed to find an excuse not to join in on the fun!
That is all,
Comeback Kid
*Non alcoholic drinks are welcome too for sure.
