Comeback Kid Presents | An Interview with Upper Left Arm
This is Kasia and Jac the truly wicked designers from Upper Left Arm, not just random babes.
You guys know we love a good interview so this week we lured Kasia and Jac from Upper Left Arm into one of our deadly traps, fed them jelly shots, played them Madonna’s version of American Pie on repeat and made them eat crazy cactus. Ultimately they started hallucinating so we quickly proceeded with the interview. The results? Why dear reader, they’re below! Enjoy:
Your first summer collection titled ULA ROO is now in-store and online at Comeback Kid. Tell us the story about how you managed to get this awesome collection title!
Our inspiration for the range was kids playing basketball on an outdoor court in the outback, drinking fizzy drinks with mangy dogs hanging round, red dirt, blue skies and a bit of delinquent tension from boredom and isolation. As Uluru is an instantly recognizable part of the Australian outback and that it only takes one letter to make it ULA (ie. Ularu) and the ‘roo’ we just tweaked… so it just seemed like the perfect name. We then spent about a month and a half writing to the Uluru-Kata Tijuata family to get permission to use it. Turned out that they were more than happy for us to so long as we used no big rocks in anything.
If you could get the ultimate person to wear your summer collection at the ultimate location, who would you pick and where would they be?
It would be great to see Tony Hawk popping a kickflip or doing a superman at the riverside skatepark on a warm summer evening in the matching khaki trackie/chinos and short sleeve shirt… Or if not Tony just a hot bloke!
How do you like to kick it around Melbourne during summer? Any hot tips? Or cool tips for that matter to help us chill during scorchers!
You might see us dropping bombs in the local pools, getting wild at some hot AFL parties, or sinking some down on the rooftop in bikinis. A cool tip… add a hand-held fan into your bag, it will cool you down whilst making you look exotic.
If Upper Left Arm were a cocktail what would the ingredients be?
If we were a cocktail I think it would have to include arms to make sense which would be pretty yuck. But if we were a shooter it would consist of a shot of tequila followed by a blended pickle shot (these are great).
If we gave you a teleporting machine that could link you to just one location in the world (or outer-space, we’re feeling generous) where would you pick and why?
Geee one place only! Jurassic Park if it was a real place otherwise maybe the moon? Everyone probably would choose the moon if there were teleporters. Otherwise maybe we could just hit a ‘shuffle’ switch on the teleporter and then it would randomly choose a location like how Doctor Who doesn’t get to choose where he ends up when he goes into that telephone box.
If you weren’t designing clothes what kind of crazy dream jobs would you guys like to have?

Lastly, what’s on for you two for the rest of 2011. Any big plans for 2012? Tell us a secret.
2011 is slipping away pretty quick at the moment, we will be back at the drawing board designing for 2012/13 SS soon which seems so futuristic at the moment. 2012 will be choca block for us, we will be doing a new film for Rumble in the Jumble and we’re also throwing around ideas at the moment for the range launch. Ideas so far include smoking ghosts, jelly wrestling in a jelly fountain made with cake which Greta (that’s you Greta*), popping out the top of the cake to start off the event. But these are just ideas at this stage…
