Local Love | The Grid Is Back

Original Image: Oh Jamie
Remember the Grolsch Grid last year? Remember when we became artists? Remember when I was in the MX? Of course you do, you’re stalking me. And so, it’s back! And like anything that happens the second time around it’s bigger and better.
Round two sees the team at Grolsch hunt down some emerging artists and the entry criteria is quite niche but fun. Firstly you’ve gotta consider yourself to be a Fitzroyal (or someone who kicks it in the backstreets of Roy regularly) and secondly you’ve gotta be over 18 (we figure this is because some sort of beer bath might be involved but also because people under 18 should be at school learning and building their brains). And thirdly you’ve gotta do this kinda stuff: write, illustrate, animate and contemplate.
And that’s it! We’re guessing aside from the beer bath a potential beer fountain and beer cake will also be involved, plus there are prizes for winners ’cause winners are grinners.
So get off your lazy arse, stop sipping your bloody cider at Kent Street and get your brain into action quick sticks because entry’s close next Friday 8th July. More info HERE.
Heads Up!

Walk the Walk | Fash Pack

Junya Watanabe, Walter Van Beirendonck, Givenchy, Yohji Yamamoto and Henrik Vibskov.
The fash pack are back on the attack (as are my alliteration skills) and so, shall we explore the latest and greatest from the Spring 2012 international menswear shows? DUH.
Junya Watanabe put forward a very good case for why guys should wear overalls. As the owner of two pairs of overalls (oh hai, I’m fashion forward) I cannot talk up the benefit of this easy-wear item enough. So I wont: y’all are just gonna have to trust me. So, are you a sorbet or ice cream kinda guy? Walter Van Beirendonck is most definitely a sorbet guy and the softer pastel colours from this icy summer treat were explored thoroughly in his latest collection. We’re loving the mint green suit pictured above but not as much as we’re loving what appear to be oversized sorbet scoops!
We’ve been a big fan of Riccardo Tisci’s work for Givenchy for some time and our love for his vibrant prints continues this season. Something beachy, something bright: the bold tropical flower prints (though quite intense when layered) make for some very desirable separates once pulled apart. Yohji Yamamoto casts shows in the most fascinating way. Men, young and old, model thin or just your ordinary guy, all join forces as they walk in his unconventional but surprisingly desirable pieces. Think nomad, think layers, think cut and colour and no matter your age or size, Yohji’s got something for you. Crazy glasses aside, this year Henrik Vibskov explored some more conventional fashion silhouettes compared to seasons past. Like the look pictured above (we love the striped jumper casually thrown over the shoulders) many of the items were very wearable but still fun.

Dries Van Noten, Viktor & Rolf, Marni, Alexander McQueen and Issey Miyake.
Stripe, right? Good. Considering the last 5 posts we’ve done have been stripe related I will not type any more about them. I swear. Nah, I lie! The Milan and Paris shows pretty much delivered masterclasses in how to wear them, they also displayed so many desirable colour combos that my brain is starting to hurt. Who would’ve thought vertical and horizontal lines could be so hypnotic?
The overall mood from the shows thus far has been a very positive one and like the crisp mints pictured at the start of this post it’s nice to get a refreshing reminder that fashion should (and is) above all else, fun. We’re going to take some styling cues from the above images and remember to take more sartorial risks when we’re scrabbling to get ready of a morning. And to wear more stripes.

Hear Me Now | Diplo Moombahton 2011 Mix

We’re excited to see Super-Producer/DJ Diplo again when he comes to town for Parklife in September (it’ll be our third time, we’re addicts). His Moombahton 2011 Mixtape dropped a week or so ago and we should warn you, it’s on the heavier side of Diplo’s mixes. Coincidentally it’s apparently also “what swag sounds like”. Featuring tracks from M.I.A, Adele, Ludacris, Major Lazer you can listen to it/download HERE.
