Hear Me Now | Three MCs and One DJ

Last week saw the Beastie Boys releasing their eighth studio album Hot Sauce Committee Part Two. They were planning on releasing Hot Sauce Committee Part One in September of 2009 but MCA (Adam Yauch) was diagnosed with cancer and for obvious reasons they delayed the release. For less obvious reasons the title changed from Part One to Part Two in the years to follow. And there you have it, new Beastie Boys people! Today we want to recap some of their earlier hits because the Beastie’s have been getting down with no delay since the early 1980s. I became nutty for the Beastie Boys when they released Hello Nasty in 1998. Become nutty with me now ’cause these boys have got the skills to pay the bills:
Egg Raid on Mojo Polly Wog Stew 1982
The lyrics are a true story. Mojo was (and perhaps even still is) a doorman who worked at a few downtown clubs. Sometimes he would let us in for free. Sometimes he would not. The song chronicles an unfortunate evening when he chose not to. - Adam Yauch
So here’s one for trivia night, the Beastie Boys weren’t always a Hip Hop crew. Yessum. They originally dabbled in punk and Egg Raid on Mojo is a spot on example of their early sound. Mohawk anyone?
Shake Your Rump Paul’s Boutique 1989
It all sounded incredible. It was so rich with layer upon layer of music. One track I particularly remember standing out was an instrumental version of what would later become “Shake Your Rump.” - Adam Yauch
I got given Paul’s Boutique on vinyl for my birthday one year and have been playing it regularly ever since. It’s magic I swear. What’s fascinating about this record is that none of the samples were cleared, they didn’t pay a sent for them even though the record was commercially released. So when you hear, say, Girl Talk, his mixes are released through the internet unofficially and for free because Girl Talk sure as hell can’t afford to pay for that many samples. So legal access to free samples all changed during this lawsuit which subsequently altered the course of Hop Hip too. You now need serious cash money to pay for old beats if you want to release something officially. Ya dig? So yeah, important album y’all!
Get It Together Ill Communication 1994
The music was something that I made just messing around with my sampler at home, just a real simple but ill moog loop and some simple beats. Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest would usually stop by when he was in town, just to hang out, listen to music and play some ball. We’d been wanting Tip to get on a track for a while, so one night we played him the track and he was like, “This shit is funky, I could rhyme on this.” Tip freestyled a few takes and then we fit our rhymes around his. - Mike Diamond
So if Paul’s Boutique doesn’t become your favourite Beastie’s album Ill Communication will. And if Get It Together doesn’t become one of your favourite Hip Hop tracks then we’ll have to cease our friendship. I joke! Nah, I don’t joke… Also, I know near-on every lyric to this song. I’m a pretty wicked MC. Tip’s rhyme, “Like Ma Bell I’ve got the ill communication” is genius but even more fun is the Beasties response, “Who’s that?” It sounds like they genuinely don’t understand the reference, which I didn’t either until Google was invented.
Putting Shame in Your Game; Three Mc’s and One DJ; Dr. Lee PhD Hello Nasty 1998
I was hanging out at the Rock Steady reunion one year when this guy came up to me and introduced himself as Mix Master Mike. When he left he handed me his card. I believe it said, “World Champion DJ Mix Master Mike.” I have yet to see anyone prove that wrong. – Adam Yauch
As Hello Nasty was my first Beastie Boys album it has a big soft spot in my heart and thus I struggle to pick favourites. So I chose three tracks. Putting Shame in Your Game because it’s dark and seriously fun to sing along to; Three Mc’s and One DJ because the video clip is pure genius as are the rhymes and Mix Master Mike of course (and that pose they do before MMM starts scratching) and the fact that this song introduced me to Turntablism; and Dr. Lee PhD because the last six tracks on Hello Nasty sound nothing like what you expect the Beastie Boys to do.
Ah! I could be here all day selecting tracks but I’ll let you chew on these for a while. Also, the above quotes have all been taken from the wonderful booklet that came with Beastie Boys Anthology: The Sounds of Science (1999) double CD.

Hear Me Now | N(y)oō ˈMyoōzik

Well as you can see we’re clearly running out of titles for our New Music posts now that we’ve decided to use phonetics. Someone stop us. In other news I was briefly capable of actually reading phonetics, like, whole sentences OMG whatevs babes. Anyway, shall we celebrate all that’s new and fun and music? Drip drip drop there goes an ear-gasm:
Beyoncé Girls (Who Run The World)
This is the oldest song we’ve ever posted under the title of “New Music” and I’m mad. I am so mad at you B. I am freaking FUMING. I think I put it best in this Tweet (the 140 character limit meant I really had to channel my anger and thoughts) but I’m still upset, like, it’s taking me ages to get over this. Basically, Beyoncé has sung over this song from 2009 (totally NSFW link but also totally awesome) well whoop-de-doo lady that’s just great. What next? She gonna remix Thriller? Her own version of Born This Way? Maybe she’ll do some Jay Z to keep it in the family? I love and support you Beyoncé but get with the times.
Santigold (Ft. Karen O) Go
OK so I heard this on the radio today and I was all like, “Oh wait, there was a good song on M.I.A.’s last album (which was a lesson in how to musically suck balls) but no(!) it’s SantIgold’s new track. Which is actually simply just spelt Santigold but if I capitalise and bold the “I” it reminds me that it’s no longer an “O”. Anyway this track is rad and I’m pumped for more Santigold to come. Or will she soon be Santagold. Oh wait. That doesn’t work.
Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi (Ft. Jack White) Two Against One
DANG this song is sexy. There’s something about it that I like. What does that even mean? What I don’t like about Two Against One is that it only plays for 2 minutes and 30 seconds. You just can’t sink your teeth into it. Repeat please.
Katy B (Ft. Ms. Dynamite) Lights On
Yeah yeah this has been doing the rounds on JJJ and it’s probably been out for about 6 months (do I look like I’m about to check my facts?!) but all I know is that I’m suddenly addicted and in love. It’s passionate you guys. It’s intense. It starts, it’s relentless and you’ll be sweating (and begging) for more. Ew.
Architecture in Helsinki I Know Deep Down
I can’t get enough of this track (you know I’m into it when I start learning the lyrics) I just want it following me around on the street or when I’m in the shower or as I wake and the birds are chirping. It suits any and every moment. Pop bliss.
New You,
