Beat of the Street | Five Star Fashion

It’s no secret that many people believe the ultimate accessory at the Big Day Out is a Southern Cross tattoo (see exemplary example above) but today we want to put that rumor to rest. We saw four. FOUR. And considering how many people were in attendance (most of which have tattoos) our five famous stars were naught to be seen. Instead, let’s take a look a what the guys were actually wearing and how the super friendly crowd stayed cool (and looked it too) under the scorching sun:

This is shop boy Ricky sporting a light striped shirt, CBK tee (represent) and chinos. When questioned as to why he was wearing chinos in such hot weather Ricky declared, “But I couldn’t wear shorts! I have a terrible tan line.” Pain (or in this case, heat) for fashion kids.

A simple way to keep the sun off but look cool; a military style shirt with a seriously faded purple tee makes for a relaxed festival look.

Bright caps always get high fives from us and this is no exception.

Readers: do you trust me? OK. Cargo’s will be back. Soon. You just wait. See above: this guy is at the forefront of fashion.

A beach themed backpack. Could there be anything more wonderful on this earth? That said, the actual beach would’ve been nice yesterday. Splish splash cool down time.

Ah ha! We declared our love for man-florals over the weekend and here’s someone leading the way! The sparse grey floral on this white tee is the perfect masculine solution to a traditionally feminine print.

Tribal boardies were the breakout trend from yesterday. Best paired with a plain tee to keep it cool. Prime example above.

We all saw this outfit and screamed collectively, “Jil Sander!” This dude effortlessly nailed the colour blocking trend. He was one of the only guys sporting this look but he worked it. WERQ.

For want of not sounding like The Sartorialist, I love how this guys collar is slightly upturned. Sure, this could be unintentional but regardless, it works.

More tribal prints but this time in a muted monochrome tank. Nice!

Sometimes it’s not what you wear but the attitude with which you wear it. Pretty sure the above guy has nailed this.

About Last Night | Big Day Out

If you follow us on Twitter then you’ll know that we hit up the Big Day Out yesterday in our sunnies, hats and 30+ ready for some great music, a few beers and some dance move busting to boot. Despite the 38 degrees and relentless sun we had a blast: queues were short, drinks were chilled and we sort respite from the heat under tents and trees alike. Our day revisited:
We kick (push, kick, push) started our day with an uplifting set from the wonderful Lupe Fiasco. Live, his sound was a lot heavier than on his albums but this was pretty apt considering his tour mates have very loud sounds themselves (namely Rammstein and Tool). His live rapping was flawless and his stage presence was hypnotic. A good start to the day. We quickly sort shelter in the Boiler Room (very much true to it’s name yesterday) and caught the epic Die Antwoord, a touch of DJ Perplex and too much of Crystal Castles. We’re about to get a big cross on our Hipster CV’s but we just don’t get it.
The sun was beginning to lower so we grabbed a beer, found Ricky and headed hand-in-hand to Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. What a magnificent set! We caught them just under a year ago at The Workers Club but they were pretty awe inspiring as the sun set behind their stage. The temperature dropped, hats and sunnies came off and we joined in for a full crowd sing-a-long of Home. Bliss. We had a quick rest under a tree as Iggy rocked on with his Stooges and then commenced an early 90s chill out session as Primal Scream played their classic album Screamadelica live. Whoa. The hairs on the back of my neck are mad at me because they did so much standing during that set. What heaven.
We quickly nipped over to catch the last of LCD Soundsystem (no Someone Great?! Boo!) and than split up three ways: one to Ratatat, one to Pnau and the other to Grinderman. Apparently Ratatat were disappointing, Pnau were fun but we’re desperate for them to release new material and I, your blog post writer, was finally won over by Nick Cave. For years I’ve been a gentle Nick Cave fan. I love Henry’s Dream. Palaces of Montezuma from Grinderman’s latest is a ripper song but as Nick tore up the stage last night I finally understood his legacy. I’m not going to try to describe him, just get your hands on some live footage stat.
The last set of our Big Day Out couldn’t have been better. We regrouped at the Boiler Room and found a rare patch of grass (that no one used as a thoroughfare…!) to dance our hearts out to M.I.A. She wisely skipped the doozies from her last release and when Paper Planes finally dropped (gunshot sound effects had been played to tease us all night long) the crowd literally went mental. People started stampeding from all around the ground to make the dance floor for this banging classic.
Best Day Out,

Walk the Walk | Cray Cray is OK
Oh hi! Fear not adventurous readers, we haven’t forgotten about some of the more “quirky” (I know you hate that word too) designers who’ve been showing their wares on the OS runways of late. Here’s our best picks from the more eccentric menswear offerings in Paris earlier this week:

Thom Browne delivered his usual cray cray including giant puffed sleeves, feathered hemlines and fabulous dress cape doo-dads. Yes. But the above look, in our humble opinion, is quite palatable: mixed checks, a furry hat and gloves inspired by The Three Musketeers (we suspect) looks surprisingly good. Maison Martin Margiela hasn’t quite been the same since Diesel walked in and Margiela himself subsequently walked out. Yet even without the man himself the design team still whip up some desirables each season, in particular this gargantuan jacket of SIZE and COLLAR and FUR. Leave it to everyone’s new favourite label to wow this Fall; Acne’s collection was near on flawless. What do I want for my birthday? Eh, everything… obviously. Henrik Vibskov had the fun levels set to high but still managed to hover near the wearable plateau. Just loving the jagged lapel on the above jacket; now where do I get me some of those sunnies?

First up in the second batch is a look from John Galliano, snow and all. Derelict jokes aside I’m love crushing on those fur and wool combo socks. And the hairy hand gloves. Speaking of fluff check out the epic shagginess of Walter Van Beirendonck’s jacket: me likey. And how cute is the models hair? Oh, I’ve cropped it out. See hair here. Givenchy used (to great effect) the above dog face (and variations on its form) over and over in their collection. As Alyx Gorman from The Vine noted on Twitter, could this be the next Christopher Kane gorilla? If so, count me in. Kenzo close today’s look at the collections with this not-so-demure floral suit. My obsession with floral suits is out of control: add this one to my wish list please.
