On The Shelves | Last But Not Least

Hanging patiently is the last of our favourite Jesen plaid shirts. This red, grey and black variety is an easy $100 and is in relaxed light weight cotton perfect for the heat to come. Our last one is marked large but would suit a medium just fine. A bit more:

Beat of the Street | Stripe Hype
Of late we’ve developed the habit of hitting up events, camera in hand, and taking somewhat crusty shots of all the street fashion wonderment. Well, we continued this (new) tradition last Friday night at the launch for Limedrop’s charming summer store, The Greenhouse. What did we spot? Stripes of every shape, size and colour we’re the key look last Friday; on bags, tops, socks and jocks. Actually, we didn’t see anyone’s jocks per se: it just rhymed. Shall we?

This striped bag looks like someone has taken to it with a fine liner and we like it. Worn over an Orri Henrisson jacket (plug alert) this guy had the look.

Here we see our stripe trend on one of those “I wish I found it first” vintage shirt finds. Twisted leather belt, relaxed chinos and lovely leather satchel complete the look.

A light summer knit to take the edge off during the cooler nights. Loving the soft blue hue (as offset by the bright light neon red).

This here is our shop boy Ricky wearing his two buck fifty striped socks of YES PLEASE. I asked him for a pair for Christmas.

There’s nothing more classic than a simple Breton Stripe. Dress it up, dress it down BREAK IT DOWN. An easy look for the coming summer days.

Hear Me Now | Another Kanye Review

Editors Note: Two thoughts: firstly, if you don’t like Kanye West don’t bother reading this, it’ll be 5 minutes of your life that you can’t get back where I go on-and-on about his greatness; secondly, swearing may occur, so please skip this post if that’s not your flavor! Go on:
When My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was finally released to the general public it was on the back of a mountain of positive reviews. Pitchfork caused a collective gasp with a gobsmacking 10.0 and a stunning review; Rolling Stone also issued full marks with a swift high 5 and prose trying to describe the complexities of Twisted Fantasy. I knew I’d love it, it was as simple as that. Having avidly followed each Good Friday release (my favourite being Chain Heavy FYI) there was no doubt that Kanye’s fourth album would deliver. So, here are my five album highlights:
Dark Fantasy
Track 1
Kick starting with a peculiar rap (nay, spoken word?) from Nicki Minaj this opening track is the perfect clue to what’s coming: heavy beats, head nodding rhythms, uplifting orchestral intro’s and cheeky, funny, razor sharp Kanye lyrics, read: and my bitch in that new Phoebe Philo. There’s no topic Mr West doesn’t cover, from his aforementioned love of French fashion house Céline right through to his dream of one day marrying a porn star. It’s true. But it wouldn’t be a ridiculous Kanye album without his excessive lyricism would it?
All of the Lights Interlude/All of the Lights
Tracks 4 and 5
There are so many guest artist on this track I suspect I’ve been sampled somewhere amongst it’s powerful sound. If I were a DJ I’d drop All of the Lights first: turn up the lights in here, baby, extra bright, I want y’all to see this; followed by the Jay Z/Alicia Keys masterpiece Empire State of Mind: big lights will inspire you, let’s hear it for New York. Yeah. If this doesn’t become a dance floor filler there’s no hope for anyone.
Devil In A New Dress
Track 8
If the Devil wears Prada then she listens to Kanye West. If you’re into “old school Kanye” then this is for you. Think: Flashing Lights, All Falls Down and We Major. Think: the smooth, clever lyrics of School Spirit (the first Kanye track I ever heard #CueObsession). Sing: I feel a woo coming on ’cause, I feel a woo coming on. Woo! There it was!
Runaway
Track 9
At 9:08 it’s quite a feat that Kanye has crafted a song so diverse you lose sense of time until Runaway finally clicks over to the next. The first play of this masterpiece caused goosebumps and curiously reminded my (albeit loosely) of VCR by another Comeback Kid favourite The xx. These lyrics find Kanye exploring his self confessed “asshole” nature, thus the songs title: baby I got a plan, runaway as fast as you can. Asshole or not, I’m sold.
Lost in the World/Who Will Survive in America
Tracks 12 and 13
I don’t like to pick favourites but hell, this is it. Continuing with one of the strongest lyrical themes on the album, light (amongst Michael Jackson and women to name some others) this is the kind of song you want to force your friends to fall in love with so if it starts playing at a party you all start dancing joyously. May the force feeding begin. Concluding with Gil Scott-Heron’s spoken word piece Comment #1 and then an eerie, somewhat lackluster smattering of hands clapping there’s no denying that Mr West has a message and he wants us to hear it loud and clear.

Beat of the Street | Double Trouble
Two events. Two chances to take awesome photos. Only one success story. Last night Comeback Kid went all ultimate hipster on your faces and attended two events. The first being the awesome new Asuza flagship store launch (a to-die-for space, it looked awesome, was awesome, awesome squared) and the second being the Bike Runway as part of Bikefest (also legendary and grand and who new so many people liked bikes?!). Sadly, after we had such a great time at Asuza we were way too many drinks in to capture any of the fashion goodness at Part 2 (taking photos tipsy is hard y’all, they were all so blurry and bad) therefor all of the below are from Part 1. Get your fashion on with the Asuza crowd:

A dash of double denim kick started this fashionable evening.

Apologies, the focus of this photo was meant to be the amazing satchel not the creepy penis finger.

Shearling for the win!

Haiku? OK:
Two people one love,
Mixed prints unite in fashion,
Hey! Is the beer free?

Get your Technicolor backpack today! This is where my envy reached it’s greenest.

More military madness done just right.

Shearling Part 2: Revenge of the White Collar

If I don’t have a shirt like this by summers end I’ll be a sad fool.

What this? Oh, it was like my Dad’s or something. I just found it under the stairs like yesterday. I guess it’s cool.
Yours,
Comeback Kid
