Because we’re not talented enough to write topic sentences, paragraphs or build any structure of note we’ve chose to ignore conventional prose and hand out awards instead. Dot points forever! Plus who doesn’t like a prize?
Didn’t Know Much About You but Pleasantly Surprised Award
Don’t get us wrong, we know of Sinden but hadn’t really explored the music. He turned out to be a DJ extraordinaire playing an exciting and elclectic mix of beats. Anyone who can get the crowd dancing that early in the day deserves a prize.
Hey Afternoon Sun, Let’s Dance Award
What kind of award is that?! A good one! Classixx mixed a gorgeous set of chill wave and disco beats. Bliss.
The Yoga Dance Off Award
Goes to Kevin! He embarked on a yoga inspired dance off that resulted in a) a loss and b) a very sore back. Hilarity ensued for us on-lookers though.
The Best Psych-Out Award
…goes to me! Some guy walked past with a tank top on and a tattoo across his chest so I figured he must want people to read it. I stared eagerly at his torso trying to decipher the cursive text (with letters hidden it was a lot like Wheel of Fortune) whilst he looked on in surprise. Why get a tattoo if you don’t want peeps like me reading it? Couldn’t work out what it said. Such is life…
The Best Live Cover Award
Regular readers know we love a good live cover so when Midnight Juggernauts (sax and all) dropped Gerry Rafferty’s Baker Street we nearly fell over. The Juggers sound perfectly complemented this vintage gem. Music moment of the day.
Froufrou, Illusion and All That Jazz Award
Missy Elliott only played two of her songs in their entirety. Maybe three. And yet, we loved her set. How’d she do it? Smoke and mirrors kids. Arriving on stage 6 minutes after her entourage of backup dancers had revved up the crowd she stepped out from a giant box that had been stacked before our eyes: and the illusion commenced. Was she singing? Who knows. Can she dance? Maybe, her backups definitely can. How many songs did she mix into her set? Well, possibly most of her hits but rather than give us full radio edits her DJ (Live? Probably not.) weaved in and out from one to another keeping us on our toes. Between songs were clues to what was coming: Are there any freaks out there? was quickly followed by Get Ur Freak On. But the predictability was what we wanted and it was deliciously fun. Like Britney’s show earlier this year, neither artist is famous for their live performance but they do know how to entertain. Her exit? She disappeared behind a cloth in a blink.
The Who’s That Girl Award
When Groove Armada hit the stage all eyes were on their new front woman Saintsaviour. Wow. What a voice. And she was pulling shapes like no tomorrow. Her stage presence gave what we already knew would be an amazing show even more kick. Part two of Comeback Kid snuck out to see local favourites Cut Copy and as the lasers rose before us I turned to Kevin and asked how his back was. Despite the pain he busted some rad moves and we both danced on.
Yours,
Comeback Kid
