Mood Board | Festival Dreaming

We’re feeling the summer festival season more than ever this year and cannot wait to dance under the sun; hence the rather random mood board pictured above… get inspired! What will we be wearing? Shorts in bright hues, eye catching tees, denim jackets, caps, colourful socks, a little bit of 90s with a dash of 70s, corduroy and big grins.

Hear Me Now | Two L’s Two T’s

People don’t like female rappers. It’s true. There are about 10,000 male ones and about 7 female ones. Why? With artists like Missy Elliott making outstanding album after outstanding album surely the door should be opening for other like minded musicians? If Missy Elliott had’ve been born Mr. Elliott we suspect her (ahem, his) career would be positioned with the likes of Mr. Z and Mr. West but alas this isn’t quite so. She continues to lead the way and with the help of fellow females like Lil’ Kim they’re carving a nice path for up-and-comers Kid Sister, Nicki Minaj and the likes. Let’s look over her click clacking crack-a-lacking career. Pass that dutch:
The Classics
…and she has many but Work It is the stand out for us. For good reason too. Not only is this song more addictive than your face it also has a video clip that makes your eyes get all bulgy. Using some masterful visual effects Missy appears to be a world class break dancer and Halle Berry too (of course): DJ please, pick up your phone, I’m on the request line (tweaky scratch)… From the same album, Under Construction came a multitude of hits including Gossip Folk (another classic vid ie. tiny kids break dancing in giant clothes rule) and Back in the Day plus a gentle nod to Dance Hall could be heard throughout this album by the more keen listener. This Jamaican vibe was amped up on her next album This Is Not A Test! and the insanely paced Pass That Dutch served up another hit. Others you might know? The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly), Get Ur Freak On, 4 My People and Lose Control.
Let’s Get Obscure
First and foremost, ya gotta credit Timbaland for a fair chunk of Missy’s producing. She also does a lot of production herself but a stand out collaboration was her work with The Neptunes on the track On & On. Shit just got freaky y’all. Another collab that makes us weak at the knees and all sweaty palmed is Cop That Shit where she paired up with Magoo and Timbaland; this track is so heavily woven with references, nods, winks and samples it’s quite the musical delight for those in the know. The mid naughties saw her release The Cookbook and though it wasn’t majorly commercially successful it featured some corkers. Joy has an unnecessarily long intro but if you skip to 1:36 you’re in for a treat. The floor is currently shaking. We Run This saw Missy sampling the master of all samples Apache by Incredible Bongo Band. Many site this track as the most re-used and abused of all time but her reinterpretation hit the dance floor spot nicely. Cardboard out folks.
Cannot wait for Parklife!
