Hear Me Now | The Stones Are Rolling

This is a snapshot of the inside cover… but the original front cover* was initially released as a three dimensional picture ie. hologram.
On Saturday, one third of Comeback Kid (that’s me!) was lucky enough to embark on a brief road trip out to the You Yangs to play on the rocks and marvel at the view. I was in charge of the decks (so to speak) so I hit play on The Rolling Stones album Their Satanic Majesties Request expecting the usual saxophone, sexed up, rock ‘n’ roll goodness that I’ve come to love them for. Lo and behold but the sound that met my ear drums wasn’t quite what I was expecting. Psychedelic, eclectic, harmonic 1960s goodness was washing past me as I turned to my co-pilot to find out what was going on. “It was their answer to The Beatles, Sgt. Pepper”. As I re-tuned my inner ear to this “new” sound I suddenly realised that indeed this might be the case.
Released in December of 1967 six months after The Beatles released Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band it clearly has similar intentions to (and possibly a lot of inspiration from) The Beatles masterpiece. It’s often viewed in a negative light amongst critics, in particular when compared to the Stones other work and yet, there’s some kind of undeniable charm to this slightly wacky release. More to the point facets of it don’t sound dissimilar to the Indie music that we’re shim shamming to today. Pen and paper ready? Let’s break it down:
Sing This All Together
A joyful, upbeat chorus of happiness; yes, that’s my review for this track. Not dissimilar to what the Polyphonic Spree touched on decades later (or to All You Need Is Love for that matter) this opening track curiously features backing vocals from The Beatles themselves. I guess the Stones weren’t known for subtlety.
Citadel
Just gonna throw this out there: if Eddy Current Suppression Ring and Tame Impala joined forces it would sound like Citadel. And I think that’s a fair force to be reckoned with. There’s almost something punk like about this track… almost. Off beat, somewhat hard to get your head around and yet very addictive. Track Two gets two thumbs up.
Sing This All Together (See What Happens)
Ah! The joys of a reprise. Like the opening track of Sgt. Peppers was given, the Stones have handed their opening track a reprise too. Eclectic, nonsensical but definitely fun I wonder if Akron/Family were inspired by this cacophony? Just speculating y’all.
She’s A Rainbow
This would’ve been the track that made their record company sigh with relief, “Phew. There is a commercial single.” It reached #25 in the U.S. (the highest position for any track from this album) and has probably become more popular with time thanks to featuring prominently on numerous “Greatest Hits” releases. Charming, hypnotic and bound to ’cause some dancing we suggest that this is the perfect entry point for this obscure album if you’re still not convinced.
On With The Show
I just love that the final track on the album was given this title. It’s as if they’re declaring, “Well, we’ve done some whack shit to show you that what The Beatles did wasn’t that hard and we promise we’ll get back on track for the next album”.
Super Request,
Comeback Kid
*Take a peak at THIS LINK of the front cover: can you see the four Beatles hiding in the flowers? Was the joke on us with Their Satanic Majesties Request? I think so. But joke or not, I still like the album all the same! In a way…
